It’s a great game allright. Haven’t met a flash game quite like it. As the review mentions though: it’s a shame it’s singleplayer. This game could be so much more if every ship had a real pilot. The ai just isn’t that fantastic and sometimes you can see at the start of a match that you’ll loose, because for instance your fleet splits up to take on two seporate fleets. There’s no command and there is only so little you can achieve as one pilot.
Great game, but it would be twice as great if not morean if it were a multiplayer game

This game has alot of potential. However, the programmers do not. They’ve come out with 3 installments of this game (Self titled, Ballistick, and Dimensions) so far. Yet they still cannot figure out how to diminish glitches nor can they take care of the hacker situation entirely.

A most important information for a site with the word “multiplayer” on its name is that

—-> Oolite does not have a multiplayer mode, and to make it it’d be necessary to re-write it from scratch, so don’t even bother to ask the devs…

In any case Oolite is so satisfying by itself that while a multiplayer mode would be nice, it’s not really necessary.

I agree with you,this is one of my favorite indie games.I hope to see a sequel with new unlockable oufits,dances(She has 1 dance which she repeats over and over),levels which are longer,and a new mode to play whether then the adventure mode.Though I doubt the will make a sequel but if they do i’ll be the first to buy it.

Once again, it is a bug in AMD/ATI’s graphics driver on windows 7 (mostly just 64-bit). I totally agree that discovering and reporting glitches, especially ones this big (operating system hang up when full screen 3D application shows standard file dialog, affects many applications besides The Polynomial, has been reported), is the job of testers – the testers employed by AMD/ATI , and actually fixing of this bug, once again, is the job of AMD/ATI.
The earliest report for this bug that I found on AMD/ATI’s website – a well made report by application developers, detailing on what exactly happens – is dated 16th March 2010.

Nonetheless, I believe I managed to work-around this bug in a recent update.

I understand your reasoning but at the same time you have to understand mine as well. Discovering and reporting glitches (especially ones this big) is the job of Testers. That’s why they’re there.

As a player, who invested money into your game when I bought it or time into it when I played the demo, I shouldn’t have to find out how to contact you if something goes wrong. I shouldn’t have to find roundabout ways to play. If there is a problem I should read a suggestion on playing it Windowed when I start it up. I should see a warning as to what the problem is before I purchase it.

This is the same for any game I play, be it mainstream or Indie. I expect the Developer to have done his due diligence and for at the very least, major glitches like this to be found and worked out. This one wasn’t so the review stands.

I truly am sorry that something you worked hard on didn’t get good marks but I’d hope you take something back from the experience. That is the last thing I will say on the subject and Good Luck.

Well, all I am saying is that it was entirely unnecessary to reinstall steam and everything within Steam, and otherwise spending time doing things that don’t usually help and only get you understandably frustrated to point of getting rather pissed off, which i can totally understand.
All you needed was to mail me reporting the issue. I could of told you to try and see if adding files to playlist works in windowed mode (that issue seem to only affect fullscreen), or to try some other things (video driver update for example). That all takes far less time than reinstalling anything. I’m not particularly interested in arguing anything either, I just want to make it clear what users should do when encountering an issue.

That crash-on-add-songs issue was reported properly by few other users, and while it is rather uncommon (and the glitch is entirely outside The Polynomial), I am in fact making a workaround. Did it occur to you how much more annoying such issues are for the developer, than for the user? I usually have to spend several days workarounding glitches in operating system and drivers, and i can only do it by guess, not being able to reproduce the issue myself.

I.e. what i mean is that you make it sound as if those buttons and sliders were entirely unlabelled, asking for descriptions such as “adjust speed”. Unless you have severe rendering issue on your setup, the settings screen should have description before each parameter. It should look something like that video:

noblemaster: Level 0 tells who the friends and enemies are, albeit I would have to agree that them do not tell exactly “how to play”, only tell you what you need to achieve and essentials of now game world works.

Regarding the technical issue – I do not recall ever receiving a bug report for it by mail (given on my website). I know that for vast majority of users it works fine. The game could never be published on place such as Steam with a major deficiency such as this, if it affected significant fraction of people. Computer set ups are extremely varied (and computers within a household share a lot in common, being usually maintained by just one technical person). The “you” was kind of plural. It is extremely frustrating having to spend time to look for the reported issues everywhere, for users complaining about issue not being fixed, all while not reporting the issue to me. Normally I do not even comment – the reason I commented is that you have even re-installed a lot of stuff, so obviously you wanted to play this game, but yet did not simply write an email reporting the issue.

Can you try switching to windowed mode and see if it works then? What is your graphics card?

Maple analogy: I can think of at least a dozen plants that match your description of maple leaf (unfortunately I can’t name any of them in English as I’m not a native English speaker and never had to talk about plants in English) – plus you see that you yourself had to resort to visuals (ascii art). You may have noticed that you can see visuals change immediately (in the background behind the GUI) once you change any setting.

For the gameplay settings such as “adjust speed”, and so on, you can request addition of such setting (game does not permit such settings due to existence of leaderboards but i can reconsider if people mostly want such customizability rather than competitive playing field). Furthermore, the setting names in game follow similar naming as “adjust speed”, except, to conserve space and to minimize repetitiveness, they are not prefixed with “adjust”.

Hello, Dmytry and thank you for leaving a comment. You must really care about the game to do so and I’m glad you were able to play it. On the other hand, I am sorry you didn’t enjoy my review and want you to know I didn’t give it lightly. I did everything in my power to play this game, as I mentioned, even going so far as to hijack a completely different computer in order to do so. Having put in so much effort without any pay out I felt it was appropriate to write out my experience. Yes, I could have sugar coated it or decided not to review it at all but that seems dishonest to anyone reading my reviews.

As for you “slide it and see” option, that seemed unnecessarily trying to me so I reported it as such. Again, this is only my opinion, but that’s where it stood. I hope you enjoy the rest of the site and continue to play to your hearts desire.

Oh, P.S.: Maple leaves can come in many different sizes but its shape is usually fairly consistent. It has a tapered bottom that ends at the stem and three to five jagged stretches that make “pedals” around the body of this leaf. Maple leaves are usually drawn by hand to show only three of these jagged sections of leaf, which are often refereed to as “crowns” due to their shape. Think of a “W” and you’ll be able to distinguish a maple leaf from any other tree leaf.

Now, of course a video game doesn’t need as detailed an explanation as that but it can say something like “adjust speed” “adjust visible drag behind your ship”, ect. With a little bit of consideration, time, and effort, I have explained a Maple leaf to some extent. That is all I expect from people creating games.

Sorry for your experience, but I think you have primarily yourself to blame. You should report the issues on forum, or otherwise get in touch with the developer, if you want issue to ever be fixed; it is just an accident of fate that it happens that I came across this blog post at all. Then once again, you can just recommend people to try out the demo first rather than writing down 1 star for technical based on a single issue, which, to add to it, is a most clear case of a driver bug ever (i.e. a bug in the software that you download or install from CD drive that comes with your computer to make your graphics card work, and which you must keep up to date).

Regarding buttons and stuff, if you have a question what a slider does, try moving it. It is fairly difficult to describe effects of a graphical setting – if you believe otherwise, please try to describe any of the more abstract items in the game, in plain English, as to form any useful mental image in the mind of the reader. Or in the real world, try to describe shape of maple leaf so that someone who never seen a maple leaf would recognize one from your explanation. You may find that it is nearly impossible.
