I didn't have a chance to implement the "no king" option yet. Will be there in a future release though!

But I stand by my equivocation of no king = to immortal king. No matter what you do with him, you don't lose your kingdom. There's no game changing difference.

If you see the king as a weakness, then yes. Besides, everybody hides the king in the rear and when it comes to losing your king, it's pretty much over for you anyway, because you probably down to the last
two-three provinces. Therefore, losing your kingdom that way is not a big part of the gameplay. It's more like "gotcha" for newbies.

Making the king immortal would allow to have him lead the armies, like a general, which makes him a strategic element of the game, like a city.
Positioning the king could make a difference between winning or losing the war.

IMO, the king should never be immortal. Regardless of his bonuses he has there should be a down side to him to keep the game interesting. Even if that downside is to buy a new king if he gets killed.

The downside would be that the killed king re-emerges in a random location. That's punishing enough. Right now the downside is simply prohibitive.
Purchasing [generals] is a somewhat different approach. While it's viable option, king has some advantages over it. The main is that everyone has one and only one king. The unlimited generals will swarm the battlefields at later stages of the game, which dilutes their effect.
I kinda liked the generals in Civilization Revolution game. In that game, you can't buy generals, you have to earn them.
Back to AoC (or Noble Kingdoms), the generals could have a progressive price, like the first for 20K, the second for 40K and so forth.

A 30% boost to defense in a single province is not a GAME CHANGING difference, especially if you opponent potentially has the same option.

That's all I'm really saying. I'm not trying to convince you that you're wrong or that I'm right. I'm just voicing my opinion that an immortal king offers no really substantial benefit worth altering the rules of the game over.

What if the kings' offensive/defensive bonuses decrease each time he's captured? That at least creates an incentive to not lose your king constantly.

amedv, please keep in mind that a lot of us have grown used to how AoC works and we tend to like it this way. We're not always willing to accept drastic changes to the core of the game play. Yes, sometimes even if it's just an option.

I am not saying that AoC is broken and needs to be fixed. I like it the way it is. But I think that having immortal king as an option adds an interesting twist to the game. Like playing Caveman Era game. I don't know if it's available on desktop, but it's really different kind of game with different strategies. I like variety. I agree that it does not make sense to change the king's role forever for everybody.
