I believe it was the US Army years ago, WWI or WWII which made SPAM popular as it was used as a food ration. And of course we can't forget Monty Python's Flying Circus: SPAM! SPAM!

Just because talking about spam doesn't mean you have to spam it! :P

Reminds me of a certain someone's behavior!

I have no problem with Spam. Prefer to fry it first. Yum yum.

King_Howard is banned for 7 minutes due to use of potentially abusive symmetry.

as i've recently begun a discussion with fodder and luc about home brewing, i'm figuring it's best to discuss it here... in The Beer Thread :gott:

@ luc - as i said... i'm about halfway through The Complete Joy of Home Brewing - Charlie Papazian

i also browsed http://www.homebrewing.com/ somewhat fervently :buch:

@ fodder - since i'm not about to shell out the coin to keep my home between 60-75 degrees... lagering (cold-fermenting) seems to be my only option until... october?!? have u brewed with a lager yeast? comments?

Speaking of home brewing... I'm thinking of making wine for the first time later this year. I've got a ton of grapes each year and last year I made grape jelly. This year, I'll either make all wine or half wine and half jelly (half is concord grapes and have is the white version of the concord which seems to be the grape used for Reisling wine).

Oh, and looks like no one got rid of the spammer.

From what I gather, home-brewing beer is quite difficult. Also, you have make sure you don't get bacteria (?) etc. into the brewing process, unless you are planning to kill people with it!

I made wine a few times though. Very easy! Just mix fruits/grapes together with sugar and water in the right mixture and add wine yeast. Takes about a month do get the alcohol/wine. Make sure you get the yeast out all the way when you fill the wine into bottles later (get a special filter to filter out the yeast).

Now, I might want to tell you that the wine didn't turn out that great, especially as I didn't have the equipment to get the yeast out all the way. Also, one time I did it, I added too much sugar, so the end product turned out little too sweet. Can be used for mix-drinks though (low alcohol). Also, I made Mango wine and Pineapple wine. Didn't have any grapes.

The reason I'm actually looking into doing wine is due to the 100 foot long (I'm guesstimating at the length) grape vine that I have. So, I have a TON of grapes. :D And, last year I finally found a local place that sells the equipment that I'll need to make wine. I think their starter kit is around $100. I don't remember all of the details as to what's included since I looked last year, but I'll be spending a lot of time researching what's involved once it's time to do this. Unfortunately, I found the place after I was already committed to making grape jelly last year.

Actually, producing wine is very cheap (assuming the grapes are available for free & equipment is already purchased).

I think the materials came to about $1/bottle of mango wine for when I tried!
